How to Join South Coast
Roller Derby

  • Where do I start?
If you want to learn how to play derby or just how to skate, we would love to have you join us at our upcoming Skate Camp! We will teach you all the basics of skating including some more advanced techniques and introduce you to roller derby rules with light contact by the end of the program. All Skate Camp graduates are welcome to join the league. We generally host an 8 week Skate Camp twice a year, typically in spring and fall.
  • Do I need experience to join?
No experience is necessary! If you are over the age of 18, we will teach you everything you need to know, whether you want to learn to skate for fun, skate as a derby player, skate as a referee, or help out with being an official without skates. We also are looking for announcers, volunteers, and even a loud cheering section. You can participate in roller derby in some capacity regardless of your previous experience – just ask us how you can get involved. We’ll teach you everything you need to know.
  • What do I need for Skate Camp?
Skate Camp Fees SCRD Waiver & Release (Provided by us) WFTDA Waiver (Provided by us) Personal Health Insurance Quad Skates, helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and mouthguard Our Skate Camp fee is $100 which covers the rink rental and instruction for the full 8 weeks. Before Skate Camp we will host an information session with a more in-depth explanation of gear, resources, and expectations. Additionally, if you have any concerns about insurance, gear, or fees, we will address alternatives and how we can work with you. We want skating to be accessible to everyone!
  • How can I be involved as a nonbinary or trans individual? Will I be welcome?
Yes! South Coast Roller Derby strives to be inclusive of all members of our community. Anyone who identifies as a woman or most closely identifies with a Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) affiliated league is welcome to join us as a skater as long as they are over 18+ years old. We are always having more conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion here at South Coast, and we want you to join the discussion and action on the track! Anyone 18+, including men, are welcome to be a referee or volunteer. All together, this means ALL are welcome to join the league as either a skater, ref, or Skate Camp participant—regardless of age, size, or body type. SCRD subscribes to the WFTDA Statement about Gender, and we are happy to talk to you about joining if you have questions or concerns. Just email Tragedy Ann, our Public Relations Chair, at scrdpr@gmail.com to get started!
  • I am not in shape, I have a disability, and/or I have a chronic illness. Can I still participate?
Yes! ALL body sizes and shapes are welcome in roller derby and have their place! We support one another on and off the track and try to incorporate stretching and outside exercises where we can to improve our skating skills, even without strapping on skates. We welcome you just as you are, and we will help you either learn to skate or to officiate off skates. Persons with disabilities are welcome, and we will see how we can get you involved in the action either on or off the track. If you have further concerns please reach out to Tragedy Ann, our Public Relations Chair, at scrdpr@gmail.com.
  • Can I drop-in at practice?
We love to have drop-in skaters at practice! With few exceptions (typically the practice before a scheduled bout) our practices are almost always open to drop-ins. We ask for a $5 drop-in fee and that skaters be up-to-date with WFTDA insurance. Please email us ahead of time at SCRDpr@gmail.com to let us know you'd like to drop-in, or message us on Facebook or Instagram.
  • Can I transfer to South Coast from my league?
We always welcome transfers, please reach out to us at SCRDpr@gmail.com if you would like to discuss transferring leagues and we can help you get the process started!
  • I skate at a (C/B/A) level. What team can I skate on?
As a small league still rebuilding membership in a post-covid era, we do not have official teams at different skill levels. However we are able to field C level, mixed B/C, and B level teams as needed. If you are interested in joining our league we encourage you to drop in on any practice so our Head Coach, Thrashley Rollson, can assess your skill level and contact safety. All of our practices are mixed level. As a league member your roster eligibility depends on your contact safety/readiness and your league membership standing; only league members in good standing are eligible to be rostered.

We Love Our Officials!

Officials are crucial to any derby bout and we are always recruiting! Skating Officials (SOs) are our referees and there are 7 positions to be filled for a bout: Head Referee (1), Jammer Referee (2), Inside Pack Referee (1, Head Ref acts as other IPR), Outside Pack Referee (3).

Non-Skating Officials (NSOs) are off-skates officials that manage everything else during a bout. A bout will typically have between  8 and 11 NSOs: Head NSO (1), Jam Timer (1), Scorekeeper (2), Penalty Tracker (1-2), Jam Lineup Tracker (1) Penalty Box Manager (1), Penalty Box Timer (2), Scoreboard Operator (1).

Please get in touch if you are interested in volunteering with us!

About Roller Derby

Roller derby is a fast-paced sport that can take some time to understand. The best way to learn more about it is to come to a bout! The second best way is to watch WFTDA's Derby 101 series. This video is a great one-minute overview of roller derby.
